The Vertical Line That Defines Contemporary Australian Facades

If you’ve driven through a new residential estate, an inner-city infill development or a coastal renovation project anywhere in Australia over the last decade, you’ve seen Axon™ Cladding. Deep vertical grooves, a clean shadow-line rhythm, and a large-format panel that goes up fast and looks considered from the first fix – it’s become the default answer to ‘What should the feature cladding be?’ on more Australian projects than any other single product in the Hardie™ Exteriors range.

Axon™ Cladding is a range of vertically grooved fibre cement panels that capture the fine detail of painted vertical-joint timber lining without the labour, movement or maintenance that real timber boards bring. Large-format panels sized to suit common wall heights reduce cutting and waste, a stepped shiplap joint on the long edges makes for straightforward alignment, and the whole system is gun-nailable and cuttable with a standard circular saw fitted with a dust-reducing fibre cement blade. Pre-primed, non-combustible, BAL40 rated.

133mm and 400mm - Narrow Board or Wide Plank

Axon™ Cladding is available in two groove spacing options, giving architects control over the visual scale of the vertical line without changing the underlying product or installation method.

Axon™ 133mm

Vertical grooves spaced 133 mm apart give the appearance of a narrow board width, reading as a fine, closely spaced vertical rhythm across the facade. Available in Smooth and a timber-look Grained texture. The most widely specified Axon™ configuration in Australian residential construction.

Axon™ 400mm

Vertical grooves spaced 400 mm apart give the appearance of a wider plank, giving a bolder, more graphic vertical statement with fewer, more widely spaced lines. Available in Smooth finish. Suits larger facade areas and projects where a more restrained groove frequency is the design intent.

Where Axon™ Cladding Works

Coastal and beachside residential

Axon™’s clean vertical lines and non-combustible, corrosion-resistant construction suit the coastal aesthetic favoured across Australian beachside suburbs without the salt-air deterioration that affects timber cladding in the same locations.

Inner-city infill and townhouses

On narrow urban infill sites and townhouse developments, Axon™’s large-panel format and fast shiplap installation suit the tight construction programmes typical of inner-city development, while the vertical line reads well on the taller, narrower facades common to these building types.

Rural and homestead-style builds

Beyond its contemporary urban use, Axon™ also suits rural and homestead-style residential architecture; the vertical board aesthetic references traditional rural cladding while delivering non-combustible bushfire performance that timber in these settings often can’t match.

Upper storey and extension cladding

James Hardie specifically positions Axon™ as an ideal option for contemporary upper-storey and ground-floor extensions; the large panel format makes light work of cladding a single-storey addition or a second-storey extension without extensive joint detailing.

Combining Axon™ with Other Hardie™ Exteriors Products

Stria™

Horizontal Stria™ on the lower storey with vertical Axon™ above (or vice versa) is one of the most common Hardie™ Exteriors facade compositions, a layered, multi-directional result using two complementary profiles from the same product family.

Matrix™

Oblique™

Oblique™'s slanted-groove boldness alongside Axon™'s cleaner vertical line, both vertical profiles, have different visual weights, giving a facade genuine depth when zoned across different wall planes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Axon™ 133mm and 400mm groove spacing?
Both use the same 9mm fibre cement panel and shiplap installation system; the difference is purely the spacing of the vertical grooves. 133mm spacing creates the appearance of a narrower board, with a finer, more frequent vertical rhythm across the facade. 400mm spacing creates the appearance of a wider plank, with a bolder, more graphic vertical statement and fewer lines. The 133mm option is also available in a timber-look Grained texture in addition to Smooth; the 400mm option is Smooth only.
Yes. While Axon™ is primarily specified as an exterior product, James Hardie publishes a specific technical supplement for using Axon™ Cladding as an internal lining, bringing the same vertical groove aesthetic to interior feature walls, corridors and commercial interiors. The groove profile is nominally 2mm deep and 10mm wide, and the sheet weighs approximately 12kg/m² in equilibrium moisture conditions. Refer to the Axon™ Interior Lining Technical Supplement for installation-specific requirements.
Yes. Axon™ Cladding adheres to bushfire attack level requirements up to BAL40 and achieves a fire resistance level of up to 60 minutes when used as part of a HardieSmart® Fire & Acoustic Wall System. As with all James Hardie™ exterior products, specific BAL installation requirements should be confirmed against the current installation guide for your project’s BAL classification.
Axon™ Cladding must be painted within 3 months of being fixed. All sheets must be dry before painting, and James Hardie recommends a minimum of two coats of quality acrylic paint applied over the pre-primed boards, in accordance with the paint manufacturer’s specifications. Leaving the panel unpainted beyond this window risks UV degradation of the primer coat and compromised paint adhesion.
