The Structural Deck Substrate That Doesn't Rot

Timber decking has one fundamental weakness that most people discover at some point in a building’s life: it rots. In elevated deck applications, over garages, over structural steel, over suspended floors, the deck substrate is exposed to moisture from above (rain and cleaning water) and below (trapped condensation and inadequate drainage), and if that substrate is timber-based, the rot timeline begins the day it goes in.
Hardie™ Deck is a structural fibre cement deck sheet designed to replace traditional timber decking substrates in elevated deck applications. Non-combustible, moisture-resistant, dimensionally stable and compatible with all standard deck finish systems, from Scyon® Axon™ Cladding planks to ceramic tile, natural stone and pebble-matrix finishes. Where timber rots and particle board collapses under sustained moisture exposure, Hardie™ Deck keeps performing.

Why Standard Timber Substrates Fail on Elevated Decks

Understanding what Hardie™ Deck is designed to replace makes it easier to understand when to specify it. The three conventional substrate options for elevated decks, timber decking, structural plywood and particle board, all have the same fundamental vulnerability in deck applications.

Moisture from above and below

Elevated deck substrates receive moisture from two directions simultaneously: rain and cleaning water from above, and condensation and reflected moisture from the structure below. Timber, plywood and particle board all absorb this moisture and release it slowly, maintaining a sustained moisture content that promotes timber decay and adhesive bond failure over time.

Rot in the substrate - invisible until it's expensive

Timber substrate rot under a tiled or cladded deck surface often goes undetected until the surface finish begins to fail, tiles are loose or cracked, or cladding boards are moving or detaching. By the time visible failure occurs, the substrate may require complete replacement. Fibre cement doesn't rot; Hardie™ Deck continues to perform structurally regardless of moisture exposure.

Fire performance over garages and living areas

Elevated decks over garages, ground-floor living areas and habitable spaces are subject to NCC fire performance requirements. Timber and particle board substrates don't satisfy those requirements in fire-rated construction scenarios. Hardie™ Deck is non-combustible and can be incorporated into fire-rated deck systems where the substrate needs to comply with the applicable NCC provisions.

Dimensional stability for tile finishes

Tile finishes over timber deck substrates are particularly vulnerable to tile cracking; the expansion and contraction of the timber substrate under moisture and temperature cycling creates differential movement that the tile adhesive can't accommodate over time. Hardie™ Deck's dimensional stability reduces this movement and the associated risk of tile failure.

Scyon® Axon™ Cladding on Hardie™ Deck

One of the more distinctive applications of Hardie™ Deck is as the structural substrate for Scyon® Axon™ Cladding planks in elevated deck applications. Axon™ Cladding, primarily specified as an exterior wall cladding product, can be used horizontally as a deck board finish over Hardie™ Deck, creating a clean, contemporary linear deck surface in the same material family as the building’s facade cladding.
The combination creates design continuity between the external wall and the deck surface, particularly effective on contemporary residential projects where the same vertical Axon™ profile runs from the facade cladding to the horizontal deck boards. Hardie™ Deck provides the structural substrate; Axon™ provides the finish. Both are non-combustible, both are moisture-resistant, and both carry the James Hardie™ product warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Hardie™ Deck be used over both timber and steel joist construction?
Yes. Hardie™ Deck is compatible with both timber and steel joist deck framing. The fixing method and joist spacing requirements differ between timber and steel; refer to the James Hardie™ HardieDeck™ installation guide for the specific fixing requirements, joist spacing limits and sheet orientation for your joist type.
Hardie™ Deck is compatible with Scyon® Axon™ Cladding planks as a horizontal deck board finish, ceramic and porcelain tiles (with compliant waterproofing and tile adhesive), natural stone and pebble-matrix finishes. For tiled deck finishes, a compliant waterproofing membrane per AS 4654 is required over Hardie™ Deck before tile installation. Contact our team to confirm the suitability of a specific finish system with Hardie™ Deck.
Yes. Movement joints must be provided at the junction with other building elements (walls, columns, and penetrations) and where deck dimensions exceed five metres in one or both directions. Movement joints must be maintained through the full deck system from the Hardie™ Deck sheet surface through the waterproofing membrane and tile system to the surface. Tiles bridging a movement joint will crack.
Yes. Hardie™ Deck is a non-combustible fibre cement product. In elevated deck applications where the NCC requires non-combustible deck substrate construction, over garages, over fire-rated floor systems and in other specific building scenarios, Hardie™ Deck satisfies the non-combustible substrate requirement. Contact our team for the specific NCC provisions applicable to your project.
