Hardie™ Brushed Concrete Cladding

Raw Concrete Character, None of the Weight

Exposed concrete has a specific visual language, texture, tonal variation, and an honest materiality that communicates permanence and substance. Achieving that language with actual formed or brushed concrete on a residential wall means committing to structural concrete construction: forms, pours, curing time, weight loads and a construction method that most residential builds simply aren’t set up for.

Hardie™ Brushed Concrete Cladding delivers the same raw, brushed concrete aesthetic, the texture, the tonal variation, and the industrial materiality in a lightweight fibre cement panel that installs like standard cladding. Pre-sealed and ready to paint; fire- and rot-resistant; resistant to moisture and termite damage; and available in panel sizes that suit different stud spacings, with a 10mm express joint that creates square, vertical, horizontal or brick pattern layouts.

The Concrete Aesthetic Without the Concrete Problems

No structural concrete works required

Achieving a formed or brushed concrete exterior wall through actual concrete construction requires structural forms, engineering for the concrete's dead load, and a pour-and-cure construction method incompatible with standard timber- or steel-framed residential buildings. Brushed Concrete Cladding is fixed like any other Hardie™ panel product; no specialist concrete trades are required.

Significantly lighter

A fibre cement panel is a fraction of the weight of an equivalent thickness of structural concrete, meaning no additional structural engineering, no footing upgrades and no crane requirements to get the material into place on an upper storey.

Genuinely engineered for Australian conditions

Where actual exposed concrete is vulnerable to efflorescence, staining and surface degradation from Australian coastal and harsh climate conditions over time, Brushed Concrete Cladding is engineered specifically to endure, be fire- and rot-resistant and be resistant to moisture and termite damage from the outset.

Pre-sealed and ready to paint

Real concrete requires a separate sealing and finishing process to control its surface appearance and weathering behaviour. Brushed Concrete Cladding arrives pre-sealed, ready for the finish coat, with the raw texture already built into the panel.

Where Brushed Concrete Cladding Works

Industrial-aesthetic residential architecture

Contemporary homes designed around an industrial or raw material palette, exposed steel, black window frames, and minimal detailing use Brushed Concrete Cladding to achieve the concrete component of that material story without the structural commitment of real concrete construction.

Coastal and harsh-condition builds

Engineered to stand up to coastal and other harsh Australian conditions, Brushed Concrete Cladding performs where real exposed concrete would show staining and efflorescence from salt air exposure over time.

Ground floor and mixed-storey applications

Explicitly suited to ground floor and mixed-storey applications, a common architectural move is a heavier, grounding material (Brushed Concrete) on the lower storey with a lighter cladding above, echoing the traditional visual logic of a masonry base with a lighter upper structure.

Standalone or paired facades

Brushed Concrete Cladding has the versatility to be used standalone across a full building or paired with other Hardie™ Exteriors profiles. Matrix™ in particular is explicitly documented as a strong companion product for a bespoke, mixed-materials architectural look.

Combining Brushed Concrete with Other Hardie™ Exteriors Products

Matrix™

Two industrial-aesthetic products, Matrix™'s smooth expressed-joint grid alongside Brushed Concrete's raw-textured surface, are explicitly recommended by James Hardie for contrast and a bespoke mixed-materials look.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Hardie™ Brushed Concrete Cladding actually contain concrete?
No. Brushed Concrete Cladding is a fibre cement panel engineered to replicate the raw, brushed concrete aesthetic, the texture, tonal variation and industrial materiality of formed concrete, without being made from structural concrete. This is what allows it to be significantly lighter than actual concrete, install using standard cladding fixing methods and avoid the structural, weight and construction method requirements that real concrete construction would impose.
Brushed Concrete Cladding’s 10mm express joint supports square, vertical, horizontal and brick pattern layouts, the same layout flexibility offered by Matrix™ Cladding. This allows the panel to be configured to suit the specific facade composition and architectural intent of the project, using a single product across multiple visual arrangements.
Brushed Concrete Cladding is specifically noted as suitable for ground-floor and mixed-storey applications. For upper-storey use, confirm the current technical documentation and any specific installation requirements with our team. The product’s suitability across a mixed-storey facade composition is well documented, but project-specific engineering and fixing requirements should always be confirmed before finalising the specification.
Brushed Concrete Cladding is non-combustible and adheres to bushfire attack level (BAL) requirements up to BAL40, the highest standard BAL rating below BAL-FZ. It also achieves a fire resistance level of up to 60 minutes when used as part of a HardieSmart® Fire & Acoustic Wall System. This makes it one of the higher-rated products in the Hardie™ Exteriors range for bushfire-prone site applications.
