Deep Shadow, Zero Wonky Boards

There’s a reason the Hamptons and coastal aesthetics keep coming back in Australian residential design: deep-shadow horizontal weatherboard has a timeless quality that suits everything from beachside renovations to modern farmhouse new builds. The trouble with achieving that look in real timber is the material itself: boards that cup, twist, split at the ends and need repainting every few years just to hold the crisp shadow line that makes the whole look work.
Linea™ Weatherboard is 16mm thick, the thickest weatherboard profile James Hardie makes, engineered specifically to deliver deep, sharp shadow lines that read as genuinely substantial from the street. The 16mm thickness does something practical too: it enables tongue-and-groove short ends, meaning boards can butt-join cleanly even off a stud, without needing to land every joint precisely on the frame. Pre-primed, resistant to shrinking, swelling and cracking, and confidently paintable in dark colours without the heat-related movement issues that affect timber.

Two Installation Directions, Two Distinct Looks

Horizontal

Traditional Weatherboard

Stacking Linea™ boards horizontally delivers a more traditional render-look weatherboard aesthetic; the deep shadow lines read as classic horizontal lapped cladding without the weight or trade complexity of actual masonry render.

Vertical

Box Modern, Barn, Farmhouse

Installed vertically, Linea™ is ideal for creating Box Modern, Barn or Modern Farmhouse architectural styles, a design direction that’s become increasingly popular in contemporary Australian residential builds. The Hardie™ Structural Batten system is specifically designed to make vertical Linea™ installation straightforward.

Where Linea™ Weatherboard Works

Hamptons and coastal-inspired homes

Linea™’s deep shadow lines are practically synonymous with the Hamptons aesthetic in Australian residential architecture, particularly when paired with contrasting Axent™ Trim around windows, doors and corners for a genuinely crisp, considered finish.

Farmhouse and barn-style architecture

Installed vertically with the Hardie™ Structural Batten system, Linea™ delivers the board-and-batten character that defines contemporary farmhouse and barn-style residential design, a look that’s become a defining trend in new-build Australian housing.

Dark colour facades

Linea™ can be confidently painted in dark colours, something that’s genuinely risky with real timber weatherboard, where dark colours absorb heat and accelerate the expansion, contraction and paint failure that timber is already prone to. Linea™’s dimensional stability removes that risk.

Renovations and character additions

Where an existing weatherboard home needs an extension or a full re-clad, Linea™’s 150mm and 180mm widths and tongue-and-groove ends make it straightforward to match or complement existing weatherboard proportions while eliminating future maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the significance of Linea™'s 16mm thickness?
At 16mm, Linea™ is the thickest weatherboard profile in the Hardie™ Exteriors range, noticeably thicker than PrimeLine™ (9mm) or Hardie™ Plank (7.5mm). That extra thickness is what allows Linea™ to deliver genuinely deep shadow lines that read as substantial from the street, and it’s also what enables the tongue-and-groove short-end joint, a detail thinner boards can’t achieve, allowing clean butt joins even where they don’t land directly on a stud.
Yes. Linea™ is available in 3000mm and 4200mm lengths specifically to support vertical installation, which is ideal for Box Modern, Barn or Modern Farmhouse architectural styles. The Hardie™ Structural Batten system is designed to simplify vertical Linea™ installation. For a more traditional weatherboard look, Linea™ can also be stacked horizontally.
Linea™ Weatherboard is available in 150mm and 180mm widths, both at the standard 16mm thickness. The width choice is a visual scale decision; 150 mm gives a slightly finer horizontal rhythm and 180 mm a slightly bolder one, and both are commonly used across residential Hamptons and coastal and farmhouse-style projects.
