One High-Density Sheet, Two Demanding Jobs

Most fibre cement applications are well served by standard sheets. But there’s a specific tier of application, commercial wet area walls, applied-finish external cladding, heavy-duty floor substrates in garages and commercial kitchens, mortar bed systems, and high-traffic linings, where standard sheet simply isn’t dense enough. Hardie™ Panel Compressed Sheet is James Hardie’s answer to that tier: a single high-density fibre cement product manufactured to a more rigid specification than standard FC, supplied by CSP Architectural for both commercial wall and cladding applications and heavy-duty floor applications.
Because the same compressed fibre cement substrate is used across both wall and floor contexts, just in different thicknesses suited to each, this page covers the complete Compressed Sheet range in one place, rather than splitting wall and floor specifications across separate pages. If you’re specifying for a commercial wet area wall, an external cladding substrate, a garage floor or a commercial kitchen floor, the product family and much of the underlying performance logic are the same.

Compressed Sheet for Commercial Walls and Cladding

Commercial wet area substrate

Behind wall tiles in commercial bathrooms, changerooms, commercial kitchens and pool amenity buildings, anywhere that requires a substrate that won't soften or deform if water gets behind the tile layer.

External commercial cladding with applied finishes

As an external cladding substrate for render, texture coat or stone-look applied finishes on commercial buildings. The denser substrate provides a more stable, consistent base for applied finish systems.

High-traffic internal lining

In commercial corridors, plant rooms, loading docks, stairwells and industrial interior spaces where walls are subjected to impact from equipment, trolleys and general operational contact.

Pool surrounds and aquatic facilities

The substrate of choice for tiled pool surrounds, splash zones and aquatic facility walls, where sustained moisture exposure requires a substrate that maintains structural integrity and tile bond strength over years of immersion-level conditions.

Compressed Sheet can also be used as an external cladding in its unfinished state or with a paint finish. For commercial facades requiring an expressed-joint system, ExoTec™ Facade Panel and System is the appropriate product; it uses the same compressed fibre cement substrate but is factory-sealed on all edges and designed for the proprietary top-hat fixing system, with CodeMark certification that the unfinished Compressed Sheet does not carry on its own.

Compressed Sheet for Heavy-Duty Floors

The three floor thicknesses reflect meaningfully different performance levels; the choice between them is determined by the load conditions, the floor finish system and the joist or slab configuration.

15mm - light to medium commercial

Suitable for light commercial and residential applications requiring a harder, denser substrate than Secura™ or Ceramic Tile Underlay, bathroom renovations over existing substrates, light commercial fit-out, and residential wet areas where a mortar bed fall is required to waste. The lightest compressed sheet thickness and the most practical to handle on domestic projects.

18mm - commercial kitchens and standard heavy-duty

The standard commercial thickness for floor applications. Used in commercial kitchens, food preparation areas, amenity blocks and commercial washrooms, anywhere combining heavy foot traffic, regular wet cleaning and the need for a substrate that won't deteriorate over the building's service life. Compatible with epoxy screed and mortar bed systems.

24mm - industrial and maximum load applications

The heaviest compressed sheet product, for industrial light commercial floors, workshops, garage floors with vehicle access and any application where point loads from wheeled equipment, pallet jacks or vehicle tyres would overstress thinner alternatives. Provides the greatest flexural rigidity in the Hardie™ floor range.

18mm - external decking substrate

Also suitable as an external decking substrate for tiled decks, verandahs and balconies where elevated load conditions require a denser product than Secura™ Exterior Flooring. For most residential tiled balcony applications, Secura™ Exterior is the more practical choice; Compressed Sheet is for heavier or more demanding external deck conditions.

Applications by Context

Compressed Sheet is not a replacement for standard FC everywhere, it’s the upgrade for specific high-demand applications. Here’s where the density difference matters:

Garages and workshops

The floor substrate behind the garage tile or vinyl finish has to handle vehicle entry, tool storage, jack stands and the occasional dropped heavy object. At 18mm or 24mm, Compressed Sheet provides structural depth and impact resistance residential-grade substrates don’t have.

Commercial kitchens and food service

The floor behind the epoxy screed or tiled surface in a commercial kitchen is exposed to heavy dropped equipment, wet cleaning, chemical exposure and sustained point loads from commercial catering equipment.

Mortar bed applications

Where the floor system requires a mortar bed screed to create a fall to waste, in shower bases, wet rooms, disabled access bathrooms and aquatic facility floors, Compressed Sheet supports the mortar bed without moisture-induced deterioration risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I specify Compressed Sheet instead of standard fibre cement sheet?
Specify Compressed Sheet when the application involves tiled wet area substrates in commercial settings; external cladding with an applied render or texture finish; high-traffic interior lining subject to mechanical impact; heavy-duty floor applications with point loads or vehicle access; or aquatic and pool environments with sustained water exposure. For standard residential wall applications, standard fibre cement sheet or Villaboard™ (for wet areas) is typically appropriate. For standard residential floor applications, Secura™ Interior or Exterior Flooring is typically the more practical choice.
Wall and cladding applications use 6mm, 9mm and 12mm Compressed Sheet, thinner configurations suited to substrate and cladding duty. Floor applications use 15mm, 18mm and 24mm, thicker configurations engineered for structural floor loading, point loads and heavy-duty use. Both ranges use the same compressed fibre cement material; the thickness is matched to the structural and performance demands of the specific application.
Yes, Hardie™ Panel Compressed Sheet can be used as external cladding in its unfinished state or with a paint finish. For commercial facades requiring an expressed-joint system, the ExoTec™ Facade Panel and System is the appropriate product; it uses the same compressed fibre cement substrate but is factory-sealed on all edges and designed for the proprietary top-hat fixing system, carrying CodeMark certification that the unfinished Compressed Sheet does not have on its own.
Yes. Compressed Sheet in floor configurations is explicitly suitable for use with epoxy screed finishes, including applications where the screed creates a fall to waste in wet room, shower base or commercial kitchen conditions. The high-density substrate doesn’t deteriorate or deform under the thermal and chemical conditions epoxy screed systems impose.
Secura™ Flooring (Interior and Exterior) uses Scyon® technology, is lighter, faster to install, tongue-and-groove jointed and gun-nailable without pre-drilling. It’s the right product for standard residential and light commercial floor applications. Hardie™ Panel Compressed Sheet is heavier, denser and available in thicker configurations for heavy-duty commercial and industrial applications where point loads, chemical exposure, mortar bed systems or vehicle access are involved.
